Preview: HEARTBREAK PRODUCTIONS ANNOUNCE SUMMER 2017 OUTDOOR THEATRE TOUR

Outdoor theatre experts, Heartbreak Productions are leading the way again this summer and will be touring throughout the UK with five new productions, over 130 performances and more than 90 venues.

The tours include a brand-new adaptation of David Walliams’ Billionaire Boy, a fresh and quirky interpretation of Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen and a unique perspective on Shakespeare’s unconventional love story The Taming of the Shrew.

Completing the line-up are the family-favourite, The Secret Garden and their original murder-mystery spoof, Murder on the Terrace.

The productions can be seen at outdoor venues from Scotland to the furthest corners of Cornwall, the west of Wales to East Anglia.

Heartbreak has now been touring for over 25 years but this is the first time they’ve taken so many shows out at one time. Maddy Kerr, Executive Director explains

“It’s a really exciting but hectic time for us. But by doing such a mix of shows ensures that there’s something for everyone, so audiences of all ages and tastes can get involved and experience outdoor theatre in some of the most amazing venues throughout the UK.”

Heartbreak Productions are renowned for their unique style and tour each production with a small but multi-talented cast of actors auditioned at the company’s local headquarters in Leamington Spa but drawn from across the country. They are joined this year by a team of directors to help get the shows on the road including award-winning Dominic Waldron, Paul Chesterton, Kristoffer Huball and Adam Morley. Peter Mimmack, Heartbreak’s Artistic Director said,

“We’re delighted that this team of talented directors have been able to join us. Between them, there’s such a wealth of experience – perfect for this year’s productions.”

Billionaire Boy is the third adaptation of a David Walliams’ novel Heartbreak have undertaken having already gained success in previous years with national tours of Mr Stink and Ratburger.

Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey is a newly-commissioned adaptation by Dani Carbery who has written for Heartbreak before including her acclaimed version of Alice – An Extraordinary Adventure.

David Kerby-Kendall has also written for Heartbreak on many occasions and summer 2017 sees the return of his murder mystery spoof, Murder on the Terrace. He describes it as

“… part Downton, part Agatha Christie. Lots of innuendo and stacks of fun”

Heartbreak is revisiting their own production of The Secret Garden - adapted from the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, this classic promises entertainment for all the family.

The final addition to the tour is The Taming of the Shrew. Heartbreak will stamp their own imitable style on this Shakespeare classic about a controversial yet tender tale of love.

Each of the productions open in Jephson Gardens, Leamington Spa and will continue to tour the UK throughout the summer visiting various outdoor venues including National Trust mansions, city parks and private gardens until Wednesday 13 September. Details about these can be found on their website – www.heartbreakproductions.co.uk.

Preview: Darlington Operatic Society have 3 local performers set for stardom

Three members of a local amateur theatre company have been accepted into prestigious theatre schools.
Nineteen year old Ruby Hoggarth has been accepted into the Guildford School of Acting. 24 year old Rachel Slattery will be on her way to the London School of Musical theatre while 19 year old Estelle Denison-French has just received word she has been accepted onto the ArtsEd Musical Theatre course.

All three young actresses recently appeared in musical productions with Darlington Operatic Society. Ruby played the role of The Lady Of The Lake in the company’s recent production of Spamalot while Rachel took on the challenging role of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde which was performed at Darlington Civic Theatre in April 2017. All three were in the company’s most recent production West Side Story and all were due to appear in Strictly Musicals 2 in November.

 Ruby Hoggarth

Ruby said “I feel absolutely ecstatic. The Guildford School of Acting has been my dream school since I stepped foot on the campus back in 2015. Since then, working with DarlingtonOS has given me the confidence to go out and give my all into every audition and, regardless of the outcome, still be happy with my performance. To be given the chance to train at one of the world’s leading institutions for musical theatre and acting is such an opportunity – I feel so excited for what the future holds.”

Guildford School of Acting is one of the most highly regarded theatre schools in the UK, past students at the college include Brenda Blethyn, Bill Nighy, Michael Ball and Celia Imrie.

Rachel Slattery

Rachel told us “I am absolutely over the moon. Going to drama school for Musical Theatre is something I have always wanted to do, and now it’s happening, it doesn’t seem quite real! I’m sad to be leaving DarlingtonOS as I have gained so many friends whilst taking part in the shows and it will always have a really special place in my heart. I’d urge anyone interested in performing and meeting new people to join the company.”

Past student at the London School of Musical Theatre have appeared in shows such as the current West End smash hit Half A Sixpence, Mamma Mia, Les Miserables, Kinky Boots and The Phantom Of The Opera.

Estelle Denison-French

Estelle told us “I can’t quite believe it. After one of the longest (and hottest – it was 34 degrees during the dance audition) days of my life I am so excited to have received this news. I can’t thank everyone enough – friends and family, who have supported me and helped me get this far.”

Famous Alumni from ArtsEd include Julie Andrews, Samantha Barks, Sarah Brightman and Will Young.
Julian Cound, Chairman of Darlington Operatic Society said “We are absolutely thrilled for Ruby, Rachel and Estelle, all three have been fantastic advocates for DarlingtonOS and it has been a pleasure working alongside them both in Legally Blonde, Spamalot and West Side Story. The girls were all cast in our current show Strictly Musicals 2 so we are going to have to re-distribute some songs, but we have the strength in depth to fill the very big boots left behind by these three wonderful performers – we wish them well in the next step on their career ladder.”

Strictly Musicals 2 will run from Tuesday 21 to Saturday 25 November. Tickets go on sale on Monday 17 July. For updates or more information visit darlingtonos.org.uk

Preview: The Castle Players - Signing the Way with Twelfth Night, The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle

Castle Players - Signing the Way

This year’s summer production of Twelfth Night will include an important first for the Castle Players - a British Sign Language (BSL) integrated performance on Wednesday 5th July.

This will differ from the usual method of signing a performance where the interpreter simply stands to one side of the stage. With integrated signing, the interpreter appears in costume and moves with the actors as part of the performance.

Professional BSL interpreter, Caroline Ryan, will work with the company in advance to enable her to integrate her signing into the action of the play. Some members of Castle Players worked with Ms Ryan last year when they performed in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Ms Ryan has worked with numerous professional theatre companies around the country, and Jill Cole, director of this year’s Castle Players’ production, was eager for her to work with the Twelfth Night cast.

“Accessibility is about so many things,” said Ms Cole, “and I hope by including a signed performance of Twelfth Night it will enable people who are British Sign Language users to enjoy the production. I have seen how signing can become part of the performance and am very much looking forward to working with Caroline.”

Ms Ryan said, “I'm delighted to be invited to work with the Castle Players again, especially as they were a great bunch to work with and made me feel so welcome.  Translating Shakespeare's text into British Sign Language, although daunting, is a wonderfully enjoyable process that can add a new layer and texture to the storytelling.”

Twelfth Night plays from Tuesday 4th- Saturday 8th July in the grounds of the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle. BSL Integrated signed performance Wednesday 5th July

Preview: Autumn Season at Northern Stage, Newcastle

Autumn 2017 at Northern Stage Autumn at Northern Stage features ambitious new productions made in Newcastle alongside new shows from some of the UK’s most exciting and innovative theatre companies as well as international work which will tour venues in the North of England thanks to a unique new partnership. Plus comedy, dance, shows for families and young people and an eclectic programme in the intimate Stage 3 performance space.

A brand new production of David Almond’s award-winning young adult novel A Song for Ella Grey will premiere in Newcastle (5 – 16 Sept). Adapted for the stage by the author and directed by Northern Stage Artistic Director Lorne Campbell, more than 100 young people from across the North East will work with the creative team to create the show. Lorne says, “For me, David’s writing is everything fiction should be, magical and fantastical without ever letting go of an unvarnished and uncompromising reality. A Song For Ella Grey is an incredible book about growing up, it contains all of the passion and intensity of being a teenager while dealing with profound honesty and courage with death, grief and the reality of surviving tragedy. The chance to not only make this incredible book into a play but to do so working with the brilliant creativity of our Young Company is an incredible pleasure and privilege.”

David Almond's story sets the Orpheus myth in teenage Tyneside, travelling from the beaches of Bamburgh to the bridges of Ouseburn. Hailed as one of the most important writers for this generation of young people, Tyneside author David Almond is the winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Award, Whitbread Book Award, Newbery Medal and, most recently, the Guardian children’s fiction prize. Previous stage adaptations include Skellig at Sage Gateshead and Miracle! An Opera of Two Halves at Sunderland Minster. The creative team also includes choreographer Martin Hylton (James & the Giant Peach, Northern Stage) and composer Mariam Rezaei (Beats North, Curious Monkey). Cast to be announced.

Based on a true story, The Suitcase (14-16 Sept) from The Market Theatre, Johannesburg explores issues of identity, migration, exile and celebration of the human spirit. Nominated in the New Director category in the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards for The Rosalie van der Gucht Prize, Director James Ngcobo saw enormous theatrical potential in this poignant and emotive story and so adapted it for the stage from a short story by Es’kia Mphahlele. Featuring live music composed and written by Hugh Masekela, it’s a story never more relevant to our time. The project was inspired by Hull Truck Theatre’s visit to South Africa in 2015 as part of a group of delegates to promote artistic exchange between the North East of England and the Eastern Cape of South Africa, funded by the Swallows Foundation. The Suitcase brings together a unique partnership of venues enabling international work to be performed on five northern stages. The show will have its UK premiere at Hull Truck Theatre in September 2017 as part of Hull UK City of Culture 2017’s Freedom season before touring to Newcastle, Derby, Lancaster and Liverpool.

From the award-winning team who made Rapunzel and Snow White, balletLORENT presents the world premiere of Rumpelstiltskin (24-28 Oct), retold by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and Director Liv Lorent. With a score by Doctor Who composer Murray Gold, costumes designed by Michele Clapton (Game of Thrones), and narration by actor Ben Crompton (Game of Thrones), this is fairytale dance theatre for all the family. Featuring a local community cast of local children aged 5-9 and over 60s alongside professional dancers, Rumpelstiltskin premieres in Newcastle before a national tour including dates at Sadler’s Wells, Hull Truck Theatre, Lawrence Batley Theatre, Oxford Playhouse, The Lowry and Warwick Arts Centre.

Wales Millennium Centre's poignant and powerful production of Manfred Karge's Man to Man (17-18 Oct) opens in Cardiff in September before touring the UK and US. After 5 star reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2015 this new tour unites a multi-Olivier and Tony award-winning creative team led by directors Bruce Guthrie (Director of RENT the Musical) and Scott Graham (Artistic Director of Frantic Assembly and Movement Director of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time). Translated by award-winning playwright, Alexandra Wood and starring Maggie Bain, whose recent credits include Emma Rice's A Midsummer Night's Dream at Shakespeare's Globe.

Following a sold-out UK tour in 2016 and a critically acclaimed hit run in the West End, The Wipers Times (2- 7 Oct) comes to Newcastle as part of a national tour this autumn. Ian Hislop and Nick Newman’s stage adaptation of their award-winning BBC film tells the true and extraordinary story of the satirical newspaper created in the mud and mayhem of the Somme, interspersed with comic sketches and spoofs from the vivid imagination of those on the front line.

Returning to his native North East after directing the world premiere of Ravi Shankar’s only opera, Sukanya at the Royal Opera House, Suba Das directs Pink Sari Revolution (31 Oct – 4 Nov) - a Curve, Belgrade Theatre Coventry and West Yorkshire Playhouse co-production in association with English Touring Theatre. Fusing drama, music and movement, Pink Sari Revolution reveals the real cost of making a stand in this true story based on the book by internationally renowned journalist Amana Fontanella Khan about her meetings with Sampat Pal.

Visiting companies also include Fuel Theatre who return to Newcastle to present a brand new show from Gyre and Gimble (War Horse, National Theatre) written by Carl Grose (Dead Dog in a Suitcase, Kneehigh). A cautionary tale for adults and older children, families and schools The Hartlepool Monkey (10-14 Oct) is an adventurous story with sea shanties and puppetry based on the 200 year old legend.

Challenging the idea that “genitals equal gender” award-winning transgender artist Kate O’Donnell literally bares all in You’ve Changed (31 Oct – 1 Nov). Kate recently stole the show as Feste in Royal Exchange Theatre’s Twelfth Night and will premiere this follow up to her hit show Big Girl’s Blouse as part of the Northern Stage at Summerhall programme at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Soho Theatre and Tim Whitehead present The Vaudevillians (7 Nov) - RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon’s bawdy, rowdy musical comedy co-starring composer and musician Major Scales.
For families, Bare Toed Dance Company’s aerial dance show Above and Beyond (26-27 Oct) is especially suitable for children with special educational needs or disabilities. For children aged 2+ iPet (23 Oct) is a hilarious performance with movement, magic and music from BonteHond in association with TakeOff Festival and Theatre Hullabaloo; every first Saturday of the month, Chris Bostock, The Storyteller, captivates children aged 4-8; Half Moon presents Fairytales Gone Bad (24 Oct) for children aged 3+; while for families with older children aged 12+ What Once Was Ours (27 Oct) explores how politics and national values impact on the complex lives of one family. Plus, Christmas shows Alice in Wonderland (25 Nov – 6 Jan 2018) - a big, bold all-singing, all-dancing production of Lewis Carroll’s classic from the same team behind the sell-out James and the Giant Peach, originally adapted for the stage for the New Vic by Theresa Heskins. And for younger children aged 2-4 Me…. (5-30 Dec) is a touching story about a penguin and their love for their child by popular children’s author Emma Dodd.

The Stage 3 programme goes from strength to strength with an eclectic mix of theatre, music, comedy, spoken word, poetry and scratch nights including Dead Baby Frog (4 Nov) from one of the UK’s most talked about comics, Sofie Hagen – winner of Best Newcomer at Edinburgh Festival 2015, former host of Guilty Feminist and current host of Made of Human cult podcasts; Seiriol Davies fierce, hilarious, ripped-up new musical about being too weird for the world How to Win Against History (10-11 Oct); and fresh from Northern Stage’s Edinburgh Fringe programme at Summerhall, Fringe First award-winner Daniel Bye returns with a political thriller as unstable as the world it describes - Instructions for Border Crossing (2-3 Nov); and theatre-meets-gig in Powder Keg’s Morale is High (Since We Gave Up Hope) (15 Nov), exploring the effects of pop culture, political policy and inane day-to-day actions on who we choose to vote for.

Tickets for most shows start at £10 and will go on general sale on 15 June, or to members via a new membership scheme from 5 June. For full details or to book tickets see northernstage.co.uk or call the box office on 0191 230 5151.

Review: Allo Allo at The Majestic Theatre, Darlington

It is a few years since I last saw The Bondgate Players, so I was pleased to be able to see them as they do their first production at The Majestic Theatre in Darlington, in which will hopefully become their new home.

The stage version of Jeremy Lloyd & David Croft’s Allo Allo is based on the popular comedy television series. This stage version relates the adventures of a hapless café owner in occupied France. Rene and his wife have stashed a priceless portrait stolen by the Nazis in a sausage in their cellar, where two British airmen are also hiding until the Resistance can repatriate them. Communications with London using the wireless that is disguised as a cockatoo add to the many embarrassments this intrepid proprietor endures in the company of his patrons. News that the Fuhrer is scheduled to visit the town inspires tricksters disguised as Hitler to frequent the cafe. Meanwhile Rene summons all the wit he can muster to save his cafe and his life.

It can be very difficult to produce a good version of a television series on stage as the audience don’t want to see a fresh characterisation but want to see a replica of their television favourites they are so familiar with, so the challenge for The Bondgate Players was to see if they could play the actors who originally starred in Allo Allo.

Andrew Roberts took the starring role as Rene and held the production together superbly capturing the role perfectly as did Edith, played by Dorothy Robinson, where her ‘appalling cabaret’ was enjoyed by all.  The innuendos provided some hilarious moments and the entire cast managed to replicate at least part of their TV character.

The set worked well and was instantly recognisable as Rene’s Café, though I did spot a bottle on the shelf which was not created until the late 80’s and with such a wide stage at times the dialogue was lost.

This was though a thoroughly enjoyable evening in a venue which is going from strength to strength.

Runs until Saturday 10th June at The Majestic Theatre, Darlington.

EDDIE IS BACK TO TRY HARD

Unique British sporting hero Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards comes to Darlington’s Central Hall on Tuesday 13 June to talk about his incredible life.

Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards is a unique British sporting hero with an incredible story to tell. The world’s ninth-fastest amateur downhill speed skier went on to become Great Britain’s first Olympic (self-taught!) Ski-Jumper, who missed out on medals by some distance, but won the hearts of the nation with his plucky, positive attitude and down-to-earth persona and emerged as a star of the Calgary ’88 Winter Olympics, returning to Britain as an overnight sporting celebrity.

In Try Hard, Eddie talks through his incredible life-journey; from self-learning ski-jumping and being shunned by the sporting establishment, to the extensive surgery to rebuild his face and body following years of spectacular crashes on the snow as he set out to break world-records in stunt jumping and speed-skiing. From bankruptcy through trustees’ mismanagement, to gaining a law degree, what will shine through is the steely resilience of a fearless man determined to overcome huge sporting and life hurdles.
